Common Questions

What is felt?

Felt is a textile that is produced by matting, condensing, and pressing fibers (in our case, wool) together.

How do you make felt?

Wet felting is the process used to turn wool into felt. The wool fibre is matted and rubbed together (in our case by hand) while applying soap and hot water onto the fibres. The hot water and soap changes the pH of the wool and allows the scales on the fibres to open up and matt together more easily and permanently. Read our blog post on our felt makers.

What can you make using felt?

The easier answer would be what can't you make using felt! Felt is such a versatile fabric, and is believed to be one of the oldest fabrics known to us. It was traditionally used to make warm clothing - mainly coats, boots, hats and blankets. Today it's use is more contemporary and we often find felt in home textiles (floor rugs, bowls, light shades, trivets, coasters and decorations) and in toys and playthings for children.

How do you look after felt?

Generally you shouldn't need to clean your felt item too often, however the best option for felt 'washing' is to spot clean. Take a damp sponge and dab gently on the area you wish to clean. Do not rub or grate the sponge across the piece as this may further felt the item, or transfer colour.
