What is corduroy?
Corduroy is a textured woven fabric known for its distinctive raised 'cords' or ridges (called wales) that run parallel along its surface. This creates a warm fabric, perfect for wearing in cooler seasons.
What is corduroy made from?
Corduroy is usually made from cotton, but sometimes it’s blended with other natural or synthetic fibres to add strength, stretch, or sheen.
Our corduroy is all made from cotton fibre, making it soft, comfortable and breathable to wear.
How is corduroy 'made'?
The unique texture (due to the vertical wales) is created by weaving extra sets of pile yarns into the base fabric, then cutting and brushing them to form the soft, velvety surface. In actuality, corduroy isn’t a fibre - it’s a weave and texture.
What is the main difference between corduroy and regular cotton?
There are two main differences between corduroy and plain cotton:
- The drape - loomed cotton has a soft, natural fall and allows for gentle movement, whereas the wales in corduroy ensures it holds its shape with a soft firmness.
- The weight / texture in corduroy is heavier and velvet-like to the touch - making it perfect for making cooler weather pieces. In contrast, regular cotton is irregular and earthy to the touch, and much lighter due to the 'flat', breathable loom - this makes cotton cooler to wear and much better in warmer seasons.
What are the best clothing items made from corduroy?
Corduroy lends itself to sturdy, layering pieces such as overalls and jackets. It also makes great dresses (pinafores?), trousers and pants (for both men and women), and skirts.
